And, when teachers and librarians collaborate to promote student self-selection, student achievement also increases. Meet the 3 local educators (2 classroom teachers and 1 librarian) who have created, P.I.E. "Personalized Independent Enrichment" a program that addresses this basic premise and empowers young readers to select, read, write, share, and extend personal reading choices throughout the year without the use of points or prizes.
Meet the authors
Dr. Nancy Hobbs is a third grade teacher in the Peters Township School District in Washington County, PA. Dr. Hobbs is a former elementary school administrator in both Indiana and PA, and has taught grades K-6. Hobbs earned her master's degree from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA and her doctorate in administrative and policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Kristen Sacco is a third grade teacher in the Peters Township School District. She has 19 years experience teaching in both PA and NV, and has been an elementary school guidance counselor in the Las Vegas area. Mrs. Sacco earned her bachelor's degree from Indiana University of PA and a master's degree in elementary school counseling from UNLV.
Mrs. Myra Oleynik is a K-3 library media specialist for nearly 800 students at Bower Hill Elementary School in Venetia, PA, recently named Outstanding PA Library Media Center by the PA School Librarians Association. Mrs. Oleynik was an elementary classroom teacher for 13 years and has served as a library media specialist for the past 17 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Grove City College, Grove City, PA and a master's of library and information science degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
